On November 14, 2020, the JACL National Board will be hosting its quarterly board meeting. This meeting will be the first open meeting for the newly elected National Board for the coming biennium. Wednesday November 18, 2020 4:30pm PT/7:30pm ET The Japanese American community is one of the few to have a continually growing majority mixed population in the United States. With more members of the community growing up mixed race, experiences, and ties to their Nikkei identity and community are changing in new ways. However, this has not come without discrimination and ostracizing from others in the community. Understanding the history and experiences of mixed race Nikkei is vital to the understanding of what it means to be Japanese American now and in the future. Our webinar will include a presentation on the history of mixed race Nikkei from Dr. Curtiss Takada Rooks followed by a panel discussion featuring Matthew Weisbly, Christine Munteanu, Vini Taguchi, Sarah Baker, and Mariko Rooks. The event will end with breakout discussions for participants to discuss their own experiences in and around the community. We look forward to you joining us for a thoughtful discussion! Seattle JACL: Uprooting anti-Blackness in the Japanese American Community Series |

This free series is geared toward youth, open to all, and created through an intergenerational committee of API activists, including our moderator Dr. Kyle Kinoshita.
Japanese American youth: What needs to happen in our community so that we can be powerful accomplices in the movement for Black lives? How can we ensure that our cries for “Never Again is Now!” are rooted in collective BIPOC action—not simply in the self-interests of non-Black Nikkei or API's? Join us for these much-needed learning sessions where we’ll be “cleaning our own house” and examining our history (such as the creation of the "model minority" myth and Black/Asian solidarity). By coming together to learn and connect, we want to give you the anti-racist tools you need to navigate the world today, and to lay the foundation for a future we all believe in. |

The Chicago Chapter of the JACL is looking for two part-time positions to be filled! Office Manager: JACL Chicago is currently seeking a part-time office manager to help with day-to-day operations, finances, and communications. The position, which is paid hourly, has a minimum of 10 hours/week, with an average of 15 hours/week. The position supports JACL Chicago Board Members and Committee Chairs, works closely with the Program Manager, and ultimately reports to the JACL Chicago President. Program Manager: JACL Chicago is currently seeking a part-time Program Manager to provide support to our student/youth facing programs. The position has a minimum of 10 hours/week, with an average of 15 hours/week while JACL holds virtual programs. When JACL Chicago is able to return to in-person programming, this position could increase in hours. The Program Manager works closely with the Office Manager and reports to the Chicago JACL President while supporting various projects and Board committees. |
