This bill establishes the Amache National Historic Site in Colorado as a unit of the National Park System to preserve, protect, and interpret for the benefit of present and future generations resources associated with the incarceration of civilians of Japanese ancestry during World War II at Amache, also known as the Granada Relocation Center, and the military service of incarcerees at the Granada Relocation Center. Senator Bennet of Colorado is attempting to bring the bill to the floor for unanimous approval of the Senate. Senator Lee from Utah is blocking this as the lone objection. We need you to contact your Senator to convince Senator Lee to withdraw his objection and allow HR2497 to pass in time for the Day of Remembrance on February 19.

Dear Senator, As your constituent, I am writing to you to share my concern and disappointment about Senator Lee holding up HR2497, the bipartisan Amache bill. This bill establishes the Amache National Historic Site in Colorado as a unit of the National Park System to preserve, protect, and interpret for the benefit of present and future generations resources associated with the incarceration of civilians of Japanese ancestry during World War II at Amache, also known as the Granada Relocation Center, and the military service of incarcerees at the Granada Relocation Center. During the war, Amache was home to roughly 7,000 Japanese Americans of the 120,000 who were incarcerated. It also represents one of the 10 main incarceration camps used during the war and would join several others already in the National Parks system, including Manzanar and Minidoka. The bill has achieved strong bipartisan support in both the House and Senate, and the 99 Senators agreed to pass it under unanimous consent ahead of the National Day of Remembrance on February 19th, but these efforts stalled because of Senator Lee’s amendment. While this may not be his intention, by putting in this amendment, Senator Lee is needlessly holding up legislation vital to the healing of wounds in the Japanese American community. This effort has always been about protecting not only the Amache story but the rural, local community surrounding the site, who are also depending on this bill to pass. The amendment would require the Department of Interior to find an equal amount of 415 acres to exchange in order to acquire the site. This requirement is not only impossible to fulfill because there is no federal land surrounding the site, but it would also be a huge burden on the local town which already has very limited resources. I ask you to please reach out to Senator Lee and share the pain that he is causing to the Japanese American community and ask that he withdraw his amendment and allow HR2497 to pass immediately. This is when we remember the day that President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which paved the way to send nearly 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry, 2/3 of whom were U.S. citizens. Please withdraw your amendment so that as we remember this painful past, we can celebrate that our government has recognized the pain it inflicted and will remember the importance of sites such as Amache to our nation's history.
