Ask your Representative to Sign onto Letter to Combat anti-Asian Bias during COVID-19
Representatives Lieu, Chu, Woodall, and Olson have worked to draft a bipartisan letter to Attorney General Barr asking him to condemn acts of anti-Asian bias during the COVID-19 pandemic. These representatives have been working with their colleagues to bring awareness to issues that matter most to the AAPI community. The JACL has signed on as an organization in support of the letter. The drafters of the letter would appreciate help in asking individual members of Congress and their offices – both Republicans and Democrats - to sign on in support by July 3rd.

"As the coronavirus pandemic has wrought enormous pain in the United States, we are concerned about an apparent increase in verbal and physical attacks as well as discrimination against Asian Americans. We invite you to join us in sending a bipartisan letter to Attorney General Barr urging him to continue to condemn these acts of anti-Asian bias and to inform us of the steps the Department of Justice is taking to combat them.
While Asian Americans are not responsible for the spread of COVID-19, they have repeatedly experienced harassment, violence, and discrimination by those who wrongly believe they are at fault. The Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council has reported 2,066 incidents of coronavirus-related discrimination. In one case, an individual stabbed three Asian Americans, two of whom were children, because he thought they were infecting others with COVID-19. Additionally, many of the victims are simultaneously serving on the front lines of the pandemic as doctors, nurses, and other health care providers.
We appreciate that the Department of Justice has stated its intention to investigate and prosecute all hate crimes, but we believe that the threat posed to Asian Americans requires a unique response from the federal government. Regular reports of new incidents against Asian Americans also underscore that more action can and should be taken. As such, we believe that a strong, bipartisan letter from Congress to the Attorney General urging him to condemn anti-Asian bias will send an important message to all Americans that discrimination against this community will not be tolerated." - From Representatives Lieu, Chu, Woodall, and Olson,
