Tsuru for Solidarity - Defund the Hate
Our friends at Detention Watch Network have launched the #FreeThemAll campaign to release immigrants in detention so that the migrant jails don't become epicenters of coronavirus. Over 3,000 doctors and nearly 800 advocates have been sounding the alarm for weeks that people in immigration detention are sitting ducks in a system that's already notorious for medical neglect, but ICE has ignored them. Along with numerous immigrants' organizations around the country, Tsuru for Solidarity has joined DWN in calling for ICE to prioritize public health by shutting down detention sites and suspending ICE arrests.
When Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II, among the many challenges was the increased risk of disease and infection exacerbated by inadequate medical care, unsanitary conditions, and close confinement. Imprisoning people in these conditions was inhumane then and is inhumane now. ICE's pattern of medical neglect and lack of medical care in immigrant detention centers, already shows the agency is not capable of caring for the people in its custody, and it is only getting worse due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As Japanese Americans, we are calling on members of Congress to prioritize programs and people most impacted by COVID-19 and the healthcare professionals who are responding to the crisis. Members of Congress have the opportunity to play a significant role in how the country responds to COVID-19. Since Congress has oversight and budgetary power over federal agencies they have the authority to expose ICE’s inadequacies and abuse and to pressure the agency from the top down. We must not provide new funding to ICE, an agency that has proven time and time again to be incapable of meeting the health needs of people in its custody. Congress must direct ICE to let people go. Each day immigrants remain detained poses new threats to their health and safety. Join us in asking to #DefundHate and release immigrants being held in detention.
