Play Ball! The Japanese American Experience and the National Pastime

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the JACL will bring together a panel of speakers who will unravel the rich history of baseball, and consider its significance for those who were wrongfully incarcerated during WWII. The extraordinary lessons that resulted from that time will be examined in order to understand how diversity within the sport can be better fostered today. Speakers, ranging from historians to advocates, will highlight the contributions of Japanese-American players and celebrate the mark that they left on the American Pastime.

JANM 30th Anniversary Benefit this Saturday and 30 Under 30 Changemakers

From our friends at JANM:

"We cordially invite you to join us for a special evening of celebration on the historic occasion of JANM’s 30th Anniversary. We’ll reflect on all we’ve accomplished in our first three decades and the timeliness and timelessness of our mission as we continue to illuminate the Japanese American experience and promote greater understanding and appreciation of America’s ethnic and cultural diversity.

Most of all, it’s a chance for us to come together and look forward to our next 30 years as we apply history’s hard-won lessons and innovative new strategies to reimagine the museum experience, inspire the next generation, and continue the struggle for inclusion and social justice."

For us, at JACL we are excited to see several JACL members, current as well as former board members, and current staff among those who are being honored. We congratulate all of the awardees on this momentous honor!

Jewpanese Oral History Project - Info Session

From the Jewpanese Community Group:

Since May 2020, a community of Jewpanese people and Jewpanese families all over the world began to meet virtually on the second Sunday of the month in celebration of Jewish and Asian Heritage Months. This group wants to document their lived experiences and record their stories on the intersectionality of being Jewish and Japanese.

This project is being conducted by a founding member of the Jewpanese community, Carmel Tanaka. Her maternal grandparents are Holocaust survivors and her paternal grandparents are Japanese Canadians who were interned during WWII. She is the founder and executive director of JQT Vancouver, a Jewish queer trans non-profit, where she designed and conducted the "BC Jewish Queer & Trans Oral History Project" (https://www.jqtvancouver.ca/jqt-oral-history-bc). Learn more about Carmel at www.carmeltanaka.ca

As an ADL Collaborative for Change Fellow, Carmel has received funding to use by the end of 2022 to help support this project, specifically video equipment, travel, accommodation, interview transcribing, online exhibit curation, as well as honoraria for Carmel and interviewee participants: https://www.adl.org/.../adl-collaborative-for-change...

There will be an info session on the JEWPANESE Oral History Project on May 8, 2022 from 10-11AM PDT. Please register here and you will receive a meeting link closer to the date: https://tinyurl.com/jewpanese
