Staff Transition and Thank You to Development Director Phillip Ozaki

Phillip Ozaki, JACL’s Program Director for Membership and Fund Development, will be leaving JACL as full-time staff on Friday, March 29. He will continue in a consulting role for the 2024 Convention Sponsors and his email (pozaki@jacl.org) will still be available until May with limited capacity.

Phillip served as JACL’s Development Director since 2019 and as the Norman Y. Mineta Fellow and Membership Coordinator from 2009 - 2011. In the last five years, Phillip led the Membership Department to increased revenues, helped organized the Centennial Education Fund, and secured new funding sources from foundations, corporations, and individuals.

Phillip says, “It’s been an honor working with our members, volunteers, and partners to advance JACL’s mission and development for the last 5 years. I got involved with JACL because my grandparents were leaders in the organization. I’ll continue to stay involved as a member and volunteer and look forward to keeping in touch.”

Phillip will continue to serve the organization by volunteering on the National Planned Giving Program committee. We congratulate him in his new role leading the development efforts at nonprofit, StartOut.org. If you, or someone you know, is interested in the Development Director role, please email jobs@jacl.org. We will be posting the job opening shortly.

JACL Applauds Improvements to Government’s Recognition of Race and Ethnicity Data Standards

March 29, 2024 -

We applaud [last weeks] announcement by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) of changes to the federal government’s race and ethnicity standards (Statistical Policy Directive 15, or SPD 15). The program was created to ensure accurate data on all communities was accessible to Federal Agencies, but besides an update in 1997, the policy has gone unchanged in the last few decades. This makes [last weeks] announcement a major victory for the AANHPI community and other communities of color. However, it is important to recognize that there are further revisions needed to ensure the policy truly encapsulates all communities and the increasing diversity of our nation.

Washington State Senate Honors Seattle JACL on 100 Year Anniversary

Photo: Sen Hasegawa presenting Bill Tashima, past Seattle Chapter President, with the Chapter's copy of the resolution.

On Monday, March 4, 2024, the Washington State Senate unanimously adopted Senate Resolution 8685 to honor the Seattle JACL on their 100th anniversary in September 2021. The resolution noted the Chapter's efforts on behalf of all Americans to protect the civil rights and civil liberties of all people while preserving our JA legacy and history.

The resolution was sponsored by Sen. Bob Hasegawa, Senate Majority Caucus Leader, (D-11th LD, Seattle), along with Sen. Patty Kuderer (D-48th LD Bellevue), and Sen. Phil Fortunato (R-31st LD, Auburn). Sen. Hasegawa and Sen. Claudia Kauffman (D-47th LD, Kent) spoke in favor of the resolution before the vote.

Seattle JACL thanks the Washington State Senate for this high recognition. This resolution honors our Chapter, the JACL, and, moreover, our past visionary leaders who built our legacy of the past and our current visionary leaders and youth who are creating our legacy for the future.

Thank you Sen. Hasegawa and your staff for your efforts on this special citation.

We appreciate your time to learn about the US Army's first traveling exhibit, I Am An American: The Nisei Soldier Experience Traveling Exhibit, which will tell the extraordinary service of the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd RCT, and Military Intelligence Service.

Starting next month, we will begin the exciting process of designing and fabricating the 1,200-square-foot exhibit, which will take 18 months. We are looking forward to sharing the design and updating you on our progress as we work towards the launch of the 11-city traveling exhibit in February 2026.

As a follow up, it is not too late to submit artifacts/photos for consideration. Deadline is May 1, but earlier submissions are highly encouraged.

Blossoms on a Poisoned Sea by Mariko Tatsumoto Available Now!

The novel is based on the true events of one of history’s most shocking industrial disasters and corporate betrayals that inspired Johnny Depp’s film MINAMATA. The mercury poisoning coverup is told through the lives of Yuki and Kiyo who meet in 1956, then gradually fall in love. Together they fight both the Japanese government and a powerful and ruthless company to save their beloved Bay and her family from an incurable disease that maims, paralyzes and kills.

Hailed as:

“A tough and beautiful book …”

“Devastating and Compelling…”
