JACL Condemns Passage of Anti-LGBTQIA+ Laws

March 30, 2022

Earlier this week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the controversial “Don’t Say Gay” bill into law for his state. Also this week, in Utah, a bill that would bar transgender youth from participating in girls' sports was vetoed by the governor, only to be overturned by the state legislature. These bills come following a string of similar anti-LGBTQIA+ laws that have been introduced across the country and in several instances, already becoming law. As staunch supporters of the LGBTQIA+ community, JACL condemns the actions of Governor DeSantis and many others who have sought to attack the LGBTQIA+ community through these legislative efforts.

Tomorrow! Tsuru for Solidarity Power Hour!

From our friends at Tsuru for Solidarity:

We are hosting a power hour in partnership with the #HomeNotHeartbreak campaign and as part of our work with the ICE out of CA coalition advocating to pass the VISION Act and send community members home to their families.

We’re coming up on two years of the pandemic – and more than a year of the Biden administration’s broken promises on protecting immigrants. California must take action NOW – we want families and loved ones across the state home with loved ones, and to suffer no more heartbreak of incarceration or deportation.

Without the #VISIONAct, immigrant community members who are incarcerated will continue to face additional, racist barriers to coming home. Even after completing their sentences, immigrants are directly transferred to ICE for detention and deportation – because local and state law enforcement continue to do ICE’s dirty work.

Join us and other advocates across California on Wednesday 4/6 at 3pm PDT/6pm EDT to call for #CommunitiesNotCages and to #StopICEtransfers with the #VISIONAct so that immigrant families and communities can reunite, and find hope this year to be whole and together again. We want people home, and no more heartbreak!
