2023 60th Anniversary March on Washington this Saturday

National Action Network has announced their Not a Commemoration, a Continuation March on Washington, scheduled for August 26th, 2023. The march looks back on the 60 years since the original march back in 1963 and all the achievements and failures that have occurred in the time in between. Twin Cities JACL Appreciation vs Appropriation Series

We’re excited to announce the next speaker of discussion series: Appreciation vs Appropriation (A nuanced discussion on cultural ownership)

Emi Ito-Gates 伊藤ゲイツ濡慧美 (she/her)
Saturday, August 26th at 8pm EDT/ 5pm PDT

Emi Ito is a mother and ethnic studies educator, as well as a core member of the grassroots organization, Japanese American Families for Justice. She began writing about the cultural appropriation of the kimono and Japanese culture in sustainable fashion several years ago.

Emi has been a trailblazer within the Nikkei community, when it comes to speaking up about cultural appropriation. Please join us to listen to her live interview by Yuki of @madebyyuki

2023 Japanese American Confinement Sites Consortium Education Conference at JANM

The Japanese American Confinement Sites Consortium (JACSC) and USC Shinso Ito Center for Japanese Religions and Culture (USC Ito Center) will host the conference at the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) in Los Angeles, California. We will convene around the theme of Memory and Monument-making: Repairing our Racial Karma from September 22nd - 24th. Detailed information on the speakers, session topics, and evening activities will be announced in the coming weeks. The conference is free and open to the public.

We hope that you will join us! We have arranged for a limited block of rooms that can be booked at a reduced rate at the Miyako Hotel across the street from JANM. These rooms are available on first come, first served until August 25th. Please feel free to begin making those travel arrangements around the following schedule:

Take the Keiro Community Survey!

Our friends at Keiro are conducting a community-wide needs survey on senior living services they may, or may not, anticipate needing in the future. Those eligible to participate include individuals who are part of the Japanese and Japanese American community and reside (or have a loved one who resides) in LA, Orange, or Ventura counties. Individuals have between now and August 31st to go on the Keiro website to sign up to participate.

Poston Preservation Society Announces 2023 Poston Pilgrimage

The Poston Community Alliance Pilgrimage will take place October 13-14. 2023 at the Blue
Water Casino and other nearby sites in Parker, Arizona.

Pilgrimage capacity is limited to 250 attendees due to facility space. Early bird registration is $195 for adults and $100 for children up to 12 years old until August 31. After that the fee is $245 for adults and $145 for children.
