Reflection from March on Washington 60th |
Yesterday was the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington. On Saturday, JACL joined nearly 200 organizations and thousands of individuals in continuing the work from that march 60 years ago. Todd Endo, one of the original marchers for JACL in 1963 joined the group for the morning along with members of his family and were able to hear addresses from three representatives from the Asian American community. Kiran Kaur Gill from SALDEF was one of the first speakers to kick off the day followed by Norman Chen of TAAF, and JACL Executive Director spoke to close out the first hour. In his remarks, Inoue called for action on African American reparations as a continuation of the ongoing work from 60 years ago to bring social and economic justice for the African American community. Upcoming NPS Listening Sessions on New Norman Y. Mineta JACE Grants |
From our friends at the National Park Service: The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 established a new competitive grant category, the Norman Y. Mineta Japanese American Confinement Education Grants, to be administered through the current Japanese American Confinement Sites Grant program. These new grants, referred to as Japanese American Confinement Education or JACE Grants, will be awarded to Japanese American Organizations that promote the understanding and appreciation of the ethnic and cultural diversity of the United States by illustrating the Japanese American experience throughout the history of the United States. The legislation establishing these new grants provides some general parameters for this new category, and we are seeking public comments to help us better understand the perspectives of the larger community in the development of grant guidelines. A newsletter and press release were distributed last month, and a website has been created to help gather this input. In order to answer questions you might have about this new category of grants we will be hosting two general information sessions to give a brief overview of the enabling legislation and provide a forum for you to ask questions about the development of the guidelines. These meetings are scheduled at following dates and times: - Thursday, August 31 2:30 PM CST / 1:30 PM MTN / 12:30 PM PST

At these meetings we will have an open conversation about the new grant category, but will not be capturing your comments. All comments that you wish to have considered in the development of the guidelines should be submitted through the official comment website linked here, prior to September 15. |
