JACL Operating Status

JACL's physical offices remain officially closed. Staff continue to do the work of the organization remotely with some visits to the physical office.  Please direct all phone calls to our Washington, D.C. Office at (202) 223-1240 and we will get back to you as quickly as possible. Otherwise, we will all be available via email. All staff emails can be found HERE

JACL Responds to Biden Student Debt Cancellation

August 24, 2022

[Last Week], President Biden announced his much-awaited student debt cancellation plan. This plan includes $10,000 in individual debt relief for non-Pell Grant recipients and $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients if the individual makes under $125,000 a year. Families can receive the same debt relief if they make under $250,000 a year. It was also announced that student loan repayments would be paused a final time, through December 31, 2022. As well as anyone with undergraduate loans could cap their repayment plan to 5% of their monthly income.

Topaz Community Outreach Meeting Tonight!

The Topaz Community Outreach project is hosting a community outreach meeting tonight to hear from community members as part of its effort to preserve and interpret a recently discovered stone monument, first erected in 1943 in honor of James Hatsuaki Wakasa. United We Stand Summit Hosted by the White House

On Thursday, September 15, President Biden will host the United We Stand Summit at the White House to counter the corrosive effects of hate-fueled violence on our democracy and public safety, highlight the response of the Biden-Harris Administration and communities nationwide to these dangers, and put forward a shared, bipartisan vision for a more united America.

You can also nominate an extraordinary "Uniter" from your own community that you think should be recognized by the White House for all the amazing work they've done over the past few years. You can nominate someone using the form below by September 1st.

JACL Celebrates Signing of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022

August 18, 2022

On August 16th, President Biden signed into law H.R. 5376, also known as the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. This historic piece of legislation aims to continue the current administration’s goal of fighting inflation by cutting prescription drug costs, expanding healthcare coverage and reducing its costs, increasing taxes on billion-dollar corporations, and combating climate change. The JACL celebrates this momentous bill and hopes its passage marks a shift towards legislative compromise instead of obstruction of progress.

 

JACL Awarded Grant from California Libraries Civil Liberties Program!

Project abstract from the grant:

These funds will update the Japanese American Experience: Curriculum and Resource Guide, a widely distributed resource for educators on the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. Last updated in 2011, the next edition (6th) will include new content about Tule Lake and current efforts regarding Black reparations. The guide will also be digitally transformed from a print/PDF format to an online guide that includes videos, photos, articles, and curated lesson plans for educators, students, and the public.

Director of Finance/CFO

  • Regular - 32 hours/week 
  • Location: San Francisco, CA (Hybrid/work from home schedule available)
  • The Director of Finance/CFO is responsible for the financial health of the organization with an annual budget of $2 million and growing. JACL has a diverse source of revenues from membership dues, charitable contributions, corporate sponsorships and partners, annual convention, grants, and a newspaper with advertising revenue.
