Saturday, April 29th through Tuesday, May 2nd in Washington, DC!

Established by JACL in 1984, the four-day annual leadership summit program introduces community leaders from across the nation to the national policy-making arena. Co-convened with OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates since 1994, the JACL/OCA Washington, D.C. Leadership Conference is structured to provide a broad overview of the decision-making process at the federal level, including meetings and briefings by public officials, key policymakers who serve in Congress, the White House, federal agencies, advocacy organizations, and the media. Participants also will be briefed on legislative issues affecting AAPI communities and will examine the role Asian Pacific American civil rights organizations, such as JACL and OCA, play in affecting public policy and pursuing civil rights legislation in the nation’s capital!

The 2023 program will again take place in person in Washington, DC, with the application of programmatic and government COVID-19 guidelines to promote a safe event. We will require all participants who are able to be vaccinated. Both JACL and OCA will be closely monitoring the COVID-19 numbers in the coming weeks, and if necessary may alter the program including the possibility of shifting to a virtual event, postponement, or cancellation.

Two Japanese American History Bills Pass Congress in the Omnibus Appropriations Package

Although it came down to the last possible day, Congress passed the FY2023 Appropriations Bill to fund the government through September 2023. Included in the passed legislation were the Norman Y. Mineta Japanese American Confinement Education (JACE) Act and the World War II Japanese American History Network Act. It also includes $4.1655 million for the Japanese American Confinement Sites program for the federal fiscal year 2023.

JACL applauds the inclusion of these two pieces of legislation that will extend funding for the JACS program and add a new education program supporting education efforts by Japanese American organizations to tell our own history. Both bills strengthen the ability of the National Park Services to share the history of Japanese American incarceration sites through historic sits both within and outside the National Park Systems.

Please see the full statement issued by JACL, linked below, upon the initial announcement of the omnibus package earlier in the week.

JACL Calls for Removal of Purdue University Northwest Chancellor for Racist Remarks

'JACL reiterates our call for Chancellor Keon to either resign or be removed from his position of leadership at Purdue University Northwest. Anything short of his removal is an endorsement from the University for his racist actions and an insult to the university’s faculty, students, and any claims to value diversity."

JACL Joins 76 Japanese and Asian American Organizations in Calling on President Biden to Establish Presidential Commission to Study Black Reparations

On December 21, JACL National joined the National Nikkei Reparations Coalition (NNRC) in sending a letter to the Biden administration calling for an executive order to create a commission to study reparations. This letter, co-signed by 76 Japanese American and Asian American organizations, is a strong testament to the commitment of our communities toward the promise of racial reparations and the healing of our nation.
