JACL Celebrates the Reintroduction of the Neighbors Not Enemies Act

January 27, 2025 - 

"On January 22nd, 2025, Representative Ilhan Omar and Senator Mazie Hirono reintroduced the Neighbors Not Enemies Act in the 119th Congress (H.R. 630 and S. 193). These are simple and straightforward bills that repeal the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 in its entirety and are vitally needed to provide a check to unbridled executive power."

 

Introducing Our New Norman Y. Mineta Policy Fellow, Katie Hill!

We are excited to announce our newest Norman Y. Mineta Policy Fellow, Katie Masano Hill!

Katie is a fifth-generation Japanese American (Gosei) from Lafayette, Indiana. She graduated from Valparaiso University with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Museum Studies at the University of Oklahoma, specializing in historical preservation and cultural heritage. 

As the Norman Y. Mineta Fellow, Katie is excited to work with the JACL Policy Team to advocate for policies that uplift the Japanese American and broader Asian American communities. She is honored to carry forward the legacy of her ancestors and is passionate about preserving and sharing their stories to inspire empathy and understanding.

We are excited to have Katie join our Washington, D.C. team and look forward to her getting to interact with our members and partners!

JACL is Hiring! Looking for a Director of Fundraising and Membership Development

Director of Membership and Fund Development

  • Regular -40 hours/week 
  • Location: San Francisco, CA (PREFERRED), Washington, D.C., or Los Angeles, CA (Hybrid Fixed, minimum 3 days per week in office)
  • Under the general supervision of the Executive Director and in support of the V.P. of Planning and Development, this role is responsible for the overall management and administration of all JACL membership and fundraising programs and initiatives.

Call for 2025 Day of Remembrance Events!

As we're coming up on Day of Remembrance, JACL is once again asking all of our chapters and supporters to send us information on any events that you know of so that we can share it with the wider membership and Japanese American community! 

Please send any information you have on your DOR events, including date(s), times, any website/social links, and images/flyers you might have! We'll continually update the listing so if you currently only have some information and are still waiting on more, send us what you have and we can update the event page. The event page and calendar will be made available later.

2025 Kansha Project Applications Available Now!

Applications are now available for the 2025 Kansha Project! The Kansha Project is a JACL Chicago program founded in 2011 that connects self-identified Japanese American/Nikkei youth ages 18-25 from the Midwest to their identity, history, and community. Intergenerational Conversations:

Ripples of the Past

Intergenerational Conversations: Ripples of the Past will be held on Saturday, March 1st, 2025 from 2:30-4:30 PM (location to be announced soon). Advanced registration is required due to limited space. Masking during this event is required. Participants must register by 5pm on February 19th, 2025.
 
Intergenerational Conversations: Ripples of the Past is a JACL Chicago program that brings Chicago-area Nikkei (people of Japanese ancestry) of all ages together to connect and process the trauma of WWII forced displacement and incarceration through personal story sharing. It was created to bridge the gap in programming for the community’s need for containers to reflect on and heal from the generational impact of incarceration.

Announcing: JACL Chicago 2025 Scholarships - Apply Now!

The Chicago Chapter of JACL offers scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $5,000+ to undergraduate and graduate students who have demonstrated a commitment to JACL’s mission. Scholarships are awarded based on an applicant’s understanding of and alignment with JACL’s mission, as well as academic performance and extracurricular involvement. Scholarships are open to all, regardless of race or ethnicity. Visit our website for more information: https://jaclchicago.org/programs/scholarship-program/

Announcing: Seattle JACL 2025 Scholarships - Apply Now!

Seattle JACL is proud to announce we are now accepting applications for our six 2024
Youth Scholarships to support students to continue their education.
Each of the six scholarships were established in honor of Seattle-area Japanese American
activists and leaders that made strides in community engagement and advancing access to
education. They are the:
- Aki Kurose Memorial Scholarship (Min.-$3,000)
- Cherry and Mas Kinoshita Scholarship ($3,000)
- Dr. Susumu Shimokon Memorial Scholarship ($5,000)
- Elaine Reiko Akagi Scholarship ($5,000)
- Minoru Tamesa Scholarship ($3,000)
- Bunshiro Tazuma Scholarship ($3,000)
Those eligible to apply include graduating high school seniors, current undergraduate,
graduate, and medical school students.
All scholarship applications and supplemental documents are due on Sunday, March 3,

Support KIYOSHI: A Legacy of Activism

Please support KIYOSHI. a feature length documentary film that presents the remarkable life of Kiyoshi Kuromiya – Japanese American author, civil rights, anti-war, gay liberation and HIV/AIDS activist. Kuromiya's story begins in a WWII incarceration camp in Heart Mountain, Wyoming, and intersects with many watershed moments in American history.

KIYOSHI is produced in collaboration with the William Way LGBT Center in Philadelphia.

Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution is on January 30! This year in honor of #FredKorematsuDay, KI will share a virtual discussion, "Advocate Now: You Can Make a Difference" on January 30 on the KI website. KI's own Founder and President Dr. Karen Korematsu, and Vice President and Director of Education Courtney Peagler will discuss the importance of advocacy, the power of education, and how to stand up for what is right. Motion Picture Association Entertainment Law and Policy Fellowship

The MPA Entertainment Law & Policy Fellowship is an entertainment-focused law and policy program that is dedicated to advancing the cause of inclusion, community, and belonging in the entertainment industry.

This prestigious program ensures the best and brightest students have the opportunity to participate in the entertainment industry, regardless of their background, by providing the selected Fellows with stipends for living and housing, and reimbursement for certain fellowship-related travel expenses to participate in the year-long program.

Fellows will gain relevant experience working at the MPA as well as its member studios and interact with senior executives and policymakers, while building the skills needed to prepare them to be the next generation of law and policy leaders in the entertainment industry.

 

National Air and Space Museum Summer Internship Applications Open Now!

From the National Air and Space Museum - 

We have launched our application for the National Air and Space Museum's 2025 Summer Internship Program. Each year, our summer interns learn from knowledgeable mentors in a variety of disciplines across the museum field, all in the dynamic atmosphere of Washington, DC. Interns work with distinguished scholars, accomplished professionals, and iconic artifacts in an immersive experience as multifaceted as the Museum itself.

The traditional summer internship period lasts for 10 weeks, from early-June through early-August. These full-time internships take place at one of our locations in the DC area and interns receive a stipend of $7,500. Apply by January 31 to be considered for the 2025 Summer Internship Program.
