JACL Saddened by Recent Attack on Family in Portland

July 6, 2022

On Saturday, July 2, a family was assaulted in Portland, Oregon while bicycling in a well-traveled and public space. The assailant verbally and physically attacked the family because they were Japanese; the man has been arrested and faces two counts of bias crimes in the first and second degrees. He was apprehended due to the intervention and assistance of numerous bystanders. The family members who were attacked, the father and his 5-year-old daughter, escaped serious injury, despite reports of the assailant striking the girl multiple times in the head.

JACL Calls for Justice in Wake of Brutal Slaying of Black 25-Year-Old by Police

July 7, 2022

On June 27th, Jayland Walker was brutally murdered in Akron, Ohio by eight police officers for a traffic and equipment violation. The JACL is left heartbroken and enraged that yet another case of police brutality has taken place at the expense of a member of the Black community. The hail of gunfire that killed Mr. Walker, in which he was shot over 60 times, was justified by the officers on the scene who claim to have been fearful for their lives and believed Walker was in a firing position. The release of footage from thirteen police body cameras shortly afterward reveals that Walker was, in fact, unarmed at the time of his death. What's abundantly clear from what we know at this time is that Walker was outnumbered and murdered in cold blood for a minor traffic violation.

JACL Sends Condolences in Response to the Assassination of Former Prime Minister Abe

July 8, 2022

JACL Executive Director David Inoue, an alumnus of the Japanese American Leadership Delegation 2018 and a past chaperone for JACL’s Kakehashi Trip, offered these remarks in response to Prime Minister Abe’s passing, “Prime Minister Abe was a champion for reaffirming the strong ties between Japan and the United States. Under his leadership, programs such as the JACL Kakehashi Program have helped so many Japanese American youth to reconnect with their ancestry, whether their families have been in the United States for generations or are newly immigrated. As we hope to resume the Kakehashi Program in the coming year, we look forward to fortifying our identities as Americans with our Japanese cultural heritage and to honor the legacy of Prime Minister Abe’s leadership in building bridges between our two countries.”

JACL Calls for Further Reform After 4th of July Shooting in Highland Park, Illinois

July 8, 2022

The JACL was shaken by the recent mass shooting at a parade in Highland Park, Illinois this 4th of July that left 6 dead and 38 injured. This attack was one of several mass shootings that occurred over the weekend and marks at least the 308th mass shooting in the U.S. this year, according to data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit tracking such incidents. The organization defines a mass shooting as involving four or more people shot, not including the shooter.

Fundraiser for Shofuso in Philadelphia After Being Vandalized

From Japan Society of Greater Philadelphia

We are deeply saddened by the recent act of vandalism that occurred at Shofuso on the evening of Wednesday June 15, 2022 that resulted in damages to the Hiroshi Senju murals and house exterior. Although the total figure of damages is still unknown to us pending a formal quote from the artist’s conservation team, we anticipate the total repairs to cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Shofuso was given as a gift by Japan to the people of the United States less than eight years after the end of hostilities in World War II. The structure was designed and built in Japan, disassembled, and shipped in its entirety to the US, where it was lovingly reassembled here by hand. The house and garden are internationally renowned, and one of the strongest enduring symbols of friendship between US-Japan. We as a city have the obligation to collectively ensure that it remains safe for future generations to admire.
