"Enduring Democracy: The Monterey Petition" Film Screening from Monterey JACL

"Enduring Democracy: The Monterey Petition," tells the story of the courage and compassion demonstrated by Monterey residents as Japanese Americans return to their hometown after being released from incarceration in the World War II Internment Camps.

This documentary shares how the Monterey Peninsula was the only community that publicly welcomed their Japanese neighbors back from the incarceration camps.  It is not only an important part of the history of the Japanese of the Monterey Peninsula but a story that stands as a lesson for all Americans interested in preserving our democratic way of life.

This documentary film takes us back to a time in United States history that many would choose to forget and is yet so relevant today. Through use of animated historical photos, archival footage, and interviews, the film creates a tapestry of memories, sights, and sounds that transport the viewer to 1940s Monterey. California.

Donate to the Idaho-Oregon Buddhist Temple for New Drums and Repairs!

The Idaho-Oregon Buddhist Temple has been a cornerstone of the community for 75 years. On Friday, Jul 8, an electrical fire broke out in the basement and the building sustained great smoke and water damage. Additionally, our friends Sangha Taiko, who have been one of the few great sources of Japanese culture and music across Idaho and Oregon for many years, have lost most of their equipment and supplies that were stored in the temple. They are asking for funds to replace the equipment.

Fundraiser for Shofuso in Philadelphia After Being Vandalized

From Japan Society of Greater Philadelphia

We are deeply saddened by the recent act of vandalism that occurred at Shofuso on the evening of Wednesday June 15, 2022 that resulted in damages to the Hiroshi Senju murals and house exterior. Although the total figure of damages is still unknown to us pending a formal quote from the artist’s conservation team, we anticipate the total repairs to cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Shofuso was given as a gift by Japan to the people of the United States less than eight years after the end of hostilities in World War II. The structure was designed and built in Japan, disassembled, and shipped in its entirety to the US, where it was lovingly reassembled here by hand. The house and garden are internationally renowned, and one of the strongest enduring symbols of friendship between US-Japan. We as a city have the obligation to collectively ensure that it remains safe for future generations to admire.

New Partnership with ADL!

From our friends at ADL:

ADL (the Anti-Defamation League), the nation’s leading organization fighting antisemitism, and the Japanese American Citizens League, the oldest and largest Asian American civil rights organization in the U.S., have launched a new partnership exploring the intersection of antisemitism and hatred against the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.

As part of the effort, the organizations will be offering a series of programs designed to increase awareness of prejudice and discrimination affecting both communities. During the COVID pandemic, hate crimes and incidents against both communities reached historic levels. ADL reported an all-time record for antisemitic incidents in 2021, as did the AAPI community.
