| | | | | | | | JACL Condemns Newly Announced Immigration Restrictions |
| | June 4, 2024 "[Last week], the Biden Administration issued an executive order imposing new restrictions on asylum seekers and migrants at the Southern border. These restrictions impose a daily limit for what are considered “illegal” border crossings. Anyone who crosses after this limit is reached asylum seekers entering at an unsecured port of entry would be deported and become permanently ineligible to seek asylum. This is not the reform we nor potential immigrants deserve." |
| | | JACL Disappointed by Proposal to Desecrate Minidoka National Historic Site |
| | June 6, 2024 "The Bureau of Land Management released its Final Environmental Impact Study (FEIS) [last week] regarding the Lava Ridge Wind Project. The proposed project would consist of 241 wind turbines, 660 feet tall, within viewing distance of the Minidoka National Historic Site. The addition of these wind turbines to the viewshed of the Minidoka Site would permanently alter the sense of solemnity appropriate to the recognition and remembrance of the 13,000 people forcibly removed from their homes and incarcerated there only because of their Japanese ancestry." |

| | | | Kansha Project Culmination 2024 |
| | Over the past eleven years, the Kansha Project has grown from a mere idea into a flagship program of JACL Chicago, sending over 100 alumni across ten cohorts to Little Tokyo, Los Angeles and Manzanar National Historic Site. The Kansha Project is a transformative program that provides young Japanese Americans the opportunity to learn about our community’s history, develop unique insights about our community’s legacy, and allows participants to explore their identity with other Japanese American young adults. In addition, the Kansha Project provides an entry point for community engagement and a pathway for youth leadership that is vital to the future of the Japanese American community at large. After a brief pause due to the pandemic, the Kansha Project took two cohorts of ten participants in 2022 and restarted the ALB with nine members. This year, the trip will take place from June 6-9 and celebrate the 2024 Kansha Project cohort with Culmination in Chicago on Saturday, June 29. - Conal Abatangelo

Participants will share reflections of their experience of their trip to Little Tokyo, LA and Manzanar Historic Site and present their unique projects summarizing their experience to the community. We hope you'll join us for this celebration of community, youth leadership, and legacy. Questions? Contact JACL Program Director, Rebecca Ozaki at kansha@jaclchicago.org. | | | | Researching Your LGBTQ+ Ancestors - A Webinar Hosted by Densho |
| | On June 12th at 10 AM PT genealogists Stewart Traiman and Linda Harms Okazaki will present a new family history webinar with Densho on researching your LGBTQ+ ancestors. In this course, we'll explore the historical presence of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer individuals in our family histories. Contrary to assumptions, confirmed bachelors or spinster aunts may not have been single; they might have had partners, even if there's no legal documentation or family acknowledgment. We'll investigate census records, newspapers, obituaries, military records, photographs, archives, and more to uncover clues about our LGBTQ+ ancestors. The class will also delve into LGBTQ+ history and stories, providing context for available records. The class goal is to enrich our family history by discovering and including the stories of our LGBTQ+ ancestors. |
