Happy International Women's Day! |
Happy International Women's Day! The theme for this year is, "Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow," and we couldn't agree more Today we celebrate, uplift, and honor women from across the globe, each of whom has undoubtedly left their mark on this world. With the one-year anniversary of the Atlanta spa shootings fast approaching, we continue to seek to eradicate gender-based violence and harassment that affects far too many women, particularly women of color, including AANHPI women. |

JACL Responds to the State of the Union |
On March 1st, 2022, President Joe Biden delivered his first State of the Union address, in which he called for bipartisanship and support for Ukraine. We applaud President Biden and his team for signing 80 bipartisan bills into law last year, including the Covid-19 Hate Crimes Act introduced by Representative Grace Meng and Senator Mazie Hirono. We extend our appreciation for his commitment to "protecting Asian-Americans from still-too-common hate crimes,” and we look forward to continuing our work to monitor and ensure that elements of the Hate Crimes Act are implemented to best support and protect our Asian Pacific American communities. |

Killing of Amir Locke Shows Need for Legislation to End “No-Knock” Warrants |
March 1, 2022 The national Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) and our Twin Cities Chapter condemn the use of “no-knock” warrants by the Minneapolis Police Department, who fatally shot 22-year-old Amir Locke on February 2nd, 2022 during a botched raid that had nothing to do with him. Bodycam footage shows Locke, a licensed gun owner, holding a weapon with his finger off the trigger after being startled awake by police. Despite not being named on the warrant, Locke was shot and killed by Minneapolis Police within seconds... This morning, Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar introduced the Amir Locke Stop Deadly No-Knock Warrants Act in response to the killing of Amir Locke and others due to these dangerous police actions. JACL supports this bill as well as more comprehensive efforts at reform including the BREATHE Act and the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which continue to stall in the Senate and could have prevented Amir Locke’s death. We are appalled by the continued congressional inaction in the face of these tragedies and demand legislation now. |

Letter to Mayor Delgleize and Huntington Beach City Council on Historic Wintersburg |
On March 1, 2022, the JACL submitted a letter to the Mayor and City Council of Huntington Beach City Council in response to the fire and unpermitted demolition of the 1910 Wintersburg Japanese Mission's manse at the Historic Wintersburg property that took place on Friday, February 25th. We're pleased to report that since submitting our letter, both the Mayor and City Manager’s Office of Huntington Beach responded, sharing that: - The Huntington Beach Fire Department is working with the Huntington Beach Police Department on conducting an investigation to hopefully discern the cause of this fire. - The City has initiated discussions with Republic Services to explore the possibility of transferring the property to the City and/or its partners as a means of preserving and restoring this property. We thank everyone who voiced their concern and contacted the Mayor and City Council of Huntington Beach.
