JACL Mourns the Loss of Secretary Norman Mineta

May 3, 2022

JACL is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Secretary Norman Y. Mineta, a true trailblazer in not only the Japanese American community but throughout the Asian American community and beyond. Secretary Mineta, known affectionately as “Uncle Norm,” was known for many things, including being the first Asian American Cabinet member, first under President Clinton and later President Bush. He was a 10-term congressman, a former mayor, a champion for Japanese American redress, and campaigned for the passage of the ADA. It was during his time as Secretary of Transportation under President Bush that Secretary Mineta shared his story of incarceration as a 10-year-old boy in Heart Mountain, Wyoming that helped shape the response by President Bush and others following the September 11th attacks. Through all his work, he was also a truly supportive member of JACL and a staple of the organization.

Letter to UPenn on Professor Amy Wax

May 2, 2022

The Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) demands the immediate suspension of the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn)’s Robert Mundheim Professor of Law, Amy Wax. We are outraged and deeply concerned that someone like Professor Wax, who has a history of xenophobia, continues to be tenured as an educator specializing in social welfare law and policy. The racist and ethnocentric statements that have been issued by Professor Wax harm and threaten the safety and wellbeing of UPenn's students, faculty, and at-large community. We support the National Black Law Students Association, National Asian Pacific American Law Student Association, and North American South Asian Law Association in condemning Professor Wax's hateful rhetoric. We request an expeditious suspension of Professor Wax, and strongly urge UPenn to revisit and enforce its stated policy of: "substantive institutional commitment to diversity along dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability, veteran status, interests, perspectives, and socioeconomic status."

Betrayed: Surviving an American Concentration Camp

From our partners at Friends of Minidoka:

Friends of Minidoka and North Shore Productions are excited to announce that Betrayed: Surviving an American Concentration Camp airs nationwide on public television for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander Heritage Month starting May 1, 2022. See air dates and locations here.

Betrayed is also available to stream for free on the PBS video app starting Monday, May 2.

Directed by Rory Banyard and narrated by Tamlyn Tomita, Betrayed tells the story of a group of American citizens and their mass incarceration by the U.S. government purely on the basis of race. In the compelling voices of survivors, the film explores the unconstitutional suspension of the civil rights of these Japanese Americans during WWII and the long-lasting impact of incarceration on their community. The film looks at the rise of Japanese American activism in defense of the rights of others, and the relevance of this story today, both in the targeting of groups based on their religion or ethnicity and the actions of the U.S. government at our southern border.

Along with our film, we have launched companion Educational Films & Lesson Plans for middle and high school students focusing on four themes: Power of Words, Power of the Press, Patriotism and Protest, and Standing Up for Others. They are freely available and downloadable.
