May 15, 2023 - On Monday, May 8th, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed three new laws with the intent to target the Chinese government in the name of national security. The new laws will restrict the Chinese government and many non-resident Chinese citizens from the purchase of farmland, or property near military bases and critical infrastructure, prohibit Florida’s state colleges and universities from partnering with foreign counterparts without approval from the state and will implement a list of banned applications such as Tik Tok that might be utilized by the Chinese or other governments for possible espionage against the United States. |

Congressional Briefing on the Neighbors Not Enemies Act |

The Neighbors Not Enemies Act seeks to repeal the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 in its entirety. The 1798 laws known collectively as the “Alien and Sedition Acts” were a set of four bills targeting immigrants under the guise of war. While three of the acts have since expired or been repealed, the Alien Enemies Act (AEA) remains in effect to this day. The AEA should be repealed because it is an archaic law that has been used to single out racial and religious minorities and deny them due process and the human right to be treated fairly. |

This LGBTQ+ Elders’ Day, we are so excited to uplift Season One of Okaeri Voices! Okaeri Voices is an oral history project featuring LGBTQ+ and allied Japanese Americans over 60 who share their journeys of heartbreak, self-discovery, and triumph, inspiring us to believe in an inclusive future for our Nikkei LGBTQ+ community. The next grant application period will begin on Thursday, June 1, 2023 To apply, you must submit a Letter of Inquiry (LOI) through our online grant system by Monday, June 26, 2023 (5 pm, PST). If your LOI is approved, you will be invited to submit a full grant application between July 16 and August 7, 2023. Please review the grant requirements on our website before submitting your LOI as we cannot accept applications that do not meet our criteria. Please note that organizations with current open grants are not eligible to submit a Letter of Inquiry. You have an open grant if your Final Report has not been approved by our Grant Committee. If so, apply for a 2023 Legacy Fund Grant today and use it as seed money to execute a multi-generational project or activity where your chapter (or district) can take a leadership role in local programming. To learn more please visit the JACL National Legacy Fund Grant page here or click down below. Applications are due by Sunday, May 21, 2023, at 11:59 pm Hawaiian Standard Time. The JACL National Council established the Legacy Fund at the 1990 JACL National Convention in San Diego. Much of the original funds were donated by JACL members who gave portions of their redress awards to further the legacy of the JACL. Each year, a portion of the earnings from the Legacy Fund Endowment provides the funds to run the LFG program. |

From Kina Grannis: Hi! Kina, Emi, and Misa Grannis here. Thanks for coming to help save our mom’s life. Here’s the deal: If you know our family, you know that our mom is an incredibly magical human. If you don’t know our family, trust us when we tell you that she brings light to everything and everyone she touches. Right now, she needs your help. The short version: 1. Mama G has a bone marrow cancer called myelofibrosis. 2. She needs a blood stem cell donor* as soon as possible to save her life. 3. To see if you are her match, all you have to do is swab your cheeks with DKMS provided swabs. *Due to our mom’s specific condition, she needs a blood stem cell donor, not a bone marrow donor. It’s a different (and much simpler) donation process. Either way, all that’s required up front are cheek swabs. |
