JACL Celebrates the Start of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

JACL Celebrates the House Passage of H.R. 3525 - The Commission To Study the Potential Creation of a National Museum of Asian Pacific American History and Culture Act

April 29, 2022

On Tuesday, April 26th, 2022, Representative Grace Meng (D-NY-6)’s H.R.3525, also known as the Commission To Study the Potential Creation of a National Museum of Asian Pacific American History and Culture Act, was passed by the House of Representatives. If this historic bill passes through the Senate and is approved and signed into law by President Biden, H.R. 3235 would ensure the creation and development of the first national museum dedicated to Asian American and Pacific Islander American (AAPI) history. The establishment of such a museum, one that is solely committed to preserving and retelling the histories and experiences of AAPIs in our country, would be a monumental achievement and would serve as a significant milestone for our community and a worthy response to the recent rise in anti-Asian sentiment across the country.

Play Ball! The Japanese American Experience and the National Pastime

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the JACL will bring together a panel of speakers who will unravel the rich history of baseball, and consider its significance for those who were wrongfully incarcerated during WWII. The extraordinary lessons that resulted from that time will be examined in order to understand how diversity within the sport can be better fostered today. Speakers, ranging from historians to advocates, will highlight the contributions of Japanese-American players and celebrate the mark that they left on the American Pastime.

Betrayed: Surviving an American Concentration Camp

From our partners at Friends of Minidoka:

Friends of Minidoka and North Shore Productions are excited to announce that Betrayed: Surviving an American Concentration Camp airs nationwide on public television for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander Heritage Month starting May 1, 2022. See air dates and locations here.

Betrayed is also available to stream for free on the PBS video app starting Monday, May 2.

Directed by Rory Banyard and narrated by Tamlyn Tomita, Betrayed tells the story of a group of American citizens and their mass incarceration by the U.S. government purely on the basis of race. In the compelling voices of survivors, the film explores the unconstitutional suspension of the civil rights of these Japanese Americans during WWII and the long-lasting impact of incarceration on their community. The film looks at the rise of Japanese American activism in defense of the rights of others, and the relevance of this story today, both in the targeting of groups based on their religion or ethnicity and the actions of the U.S. government at our southern border.

Along with our film, we have launched companion Educational Films & Lesson Plans for middle and high school students focusing on four themes: Power of Words, Power of the Press, Patriotism and Protest, and Standing Up for Others. They are freely available and downloadable.

Jewpanese Oral History Project - Info Session

From the Jewpanese Community Group:

Since May 2020, a community of Jewpanese people and Jewpanese families all over the world began to meet virtually on the second Sunday of the month in celebration of Jewish and Asian Heritage Months. This group wants to document their lived experiences and record their stories on the intersectionality of being Jewish and Japanese.

This project is being conducted by a founding member of the Jewpanese community, Carmel Tanaka. Her maternal grandparents are Holocaust survivors and her paternal grandparents are Japanese Canadians who were interned during WWII. She is the founder and executive director of JQT Vancouver, a Jewish queer trans non-profit, where she designed and conducted the "BC Jewish Queer & Trans Oral History Project" (https://www.jqtvancouver.ca/jqt-oral-history-bc). Learn more about Carmel at www.carmeltanaka.ca

As an ADL Collaborative for Change Fellow, Carmel has received funding to use by the end of 2022 to help support this project, specifically video equipment, travel, accommodation, interview transcribing, online exhibit curation, as well as honoraria for Carmel and interviewee participants: https://www.adl.org/.../adl-collaborative-for-change...

There will be an info session on the JEWPANESE Oral History Project on May 8, 2022 from 10-11AM PDT. Please register here and you will receive a meeting link closer to the date: https://tinyurl.com/jewpanese
