Gift a JACL Membership with our Otoshidama Campaign! |
New Year's Day holds a special place in Japanese culture. During this season, families come together to celebrate the dawning of a new year by engaging in traditional activities, such as Otoshidama. Otoshidama is the tradition of presenting children with a monetary gift in the form of a special envelope that bears the new year's zodiac sign (next year is the Rabbit). We hope you join us in celebrating and honoring the long-standing Japanese tradition of Otoshidama by gifting or renewing a membership for someone you cherish dearly today. |

Deeply Honored: Two Heroes of the 442nd |
Fred Hagstrom, utilizing two of his art books, explains how some American youths of Japanese descent were able to leave internment camps during World War II to continue their education. He also recounts the moving stories of incarcerated Nisei who volunteered for U.S. military service and served heroically throughout that time. Fred Hagstrom has recently moved to New Mexico after a career teaching at Carleton College in Minnesota. His books and prints are held in numerous public collections, including the Library of Congress. He has spoken on the topic of the World War II incarceration at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, the Wing Luke Museum in Seattle, and the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, near Seattle. This online talk is a joint presentation by the Friends of History and the New Mexico History Museum in conjunction with the Smithsonian National Museum of American History’s traveling exhibit, Righting a Wrong: Japanese Americans and World War II. The exhibit is currently on display at the New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe thru December 31st, 2022. |

Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution |
This is our first in-person Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution event to honor our favorite civil rights hero. And the 40th anniversary of the coram nobis cases, the legal term for the U.S. Supreme Court cases of three Japanese Americans who challenged Executive Order 9066. Our program will commemorate the heroes, legal teams of the cases and how they relate to civil rights, social justice, and advocacy. As we honor the past, we take action today through civics education and voting. We hope you will join us! |

What Does Home Mean to You? Responses Wanted for PC Article! |
Lynda Lin Grigsby, a contributing writer for the Pacific Citizen, wants to ask you some questions: what is home to you? Is it a city? A building? A person who always holds you close? What does “home” smell, taste, and feel like? Some people say home is wherever their loved one (human or pet) is or it’s the feeling of kicking off your shoes at the doorstep. After WWII, home for many Japanese Americans felt unsafe to return. Home means many different things to different people. It could mean the feeling of ease on a fishing boat or with a paintbrush or the first sip of a warm broth. I want to hear any and all of your personal definitions of what home means. Please send an email by Friday, Dec. 2 with your brief response to lyndalin@gmail.com for possible use in this year's Pacific Citizen’s Holiday Issue. Responses can be informal, humorous, ordinary, etc. I am just interested in hearing your stories. |

JACL Arizona Chapter - First Annual Essay Contest and Upcoming Korematsu Day |
Photo courtesy of JACL-AZ Chapter JACL-AZ held its 1st Annual Student Essay Challenge in 2021. It was the vision of one of our board members. The idea was that it would provide students with the opportunity to study and develop excellent writing skills while learning about their heritage. It was also believed that an essay would be very impressive on a JACL-AZ scholarship application. The idea came about when volunteer activities were no longer available due to the pandemic. Essay Challenge topics: HS students: “What does it mean to be an American? Norm Mineta Legacy Project.” Elementary/Middle School students: Share a story about a family hero or the heroes in your life. We are very proud of three students that won: Erika Germinario was our first-place winner in the HS division. Josh Tominaga was our 2nd place winner in the HS division. Ema Saliba was our first-place winner in the 8th-grade division. In addition to their cash prizes, they each enjoyed creating a wonderful video about their individual feelings of excitement as they studied and wrote about their experience. (Videos available below to view) A celebration was held during Golden Week at the Japanese Friendship Garden this past April. There was an expression of gratitude and appreciation to JACL - AZ for everything members and volunteers do for the community and for inspiring the next generation! We were also happy to announce the 2nd Annual Essay Challenge recently. In memory of Norm Mineta, we continue to honor him in our essay challenge. High School students have the option of learning about the life of the distinguished career of Norm Mineta by visiting minetalegacyproject.com. As Fred Korematsu Day approaches, a second option for HS Students is to write about Fred Korematsu and visit the Korematsu Institute at: korematsuinstitute.org. Fred Korematsu challenged the constitutionality of Executive Order 9066. Arizona is proud to celebrate Fred Korematsu Day: Feb. 3, 2023. Students in Grades 4 through 9 can choose to write about their family hero or the heroes in their life. Essays due Feb. 3, 2023. Please note that essays must be anonymous for judging purposes.
